Indeed, In the "old days" he was like the Internet, the place where we could cut through the crap and actually get a window on the world outside. I heard so many bands on his show that I never would have heard from any other DJ (especially on Radio 1!!). I have a couple of DL'd shows of his that I treasure. I'm proud to say that I still have my "Teenage Kicks" '45. For you youngsters out there, a 45 record is like a very large black CD with a hole in the middle that won't fit into your computer however hard you try.
